Creating a sustainable future through the conversion of used oil into clean fuel
Every year, America produces enough motor and machine oil — collectively called “used oil” — to fill 26 million bathtubs. However, the majority of that oil — enough to fill 19 million bathtubs — is burned, illegally disposed of or dumped in landfills and storm sewers, poisoning our air, ground and waterways.
And when that used oil is dumped in a landfill, the soil contamination makes it impossible to sustain life. Illegal disposal is the single largest human cause of oil pollution in our oceans, hurting marine life and can make crabs and other shellfish unsafe for human consumption. And when it’s burned, it leaves behind harmful greenhouse gases.
It’s an environmental crisis and it doesn’t have to be this way.

New Jersey Used Oil Recycling Facility
SquareOne Energy’s Paulsboro,
New Jersey Used Oil Recycling Facility
Bringing the most advanced used oil recycling operation in the U.S. to the Northeast
Developing proven technology for the benefit of the Northeast region
We will put the northeast on a stronger path to a cleaner environment with our forthcoming Paulsboro, New Jersey, recycling facility for used motor and machine oils.
We are SquareOne Energy, the first U.S.-based company to combine the collection of a wide range of used oils and the production of clean on-road fuels. Our facility will be the most advanced and capable recycling asset in the country, processing a wide array of used motor and machine oils into clean fuel products needed by semi-trucks, cargo ships and others in the large-scale transportation industry.
-
Inefficient burning creates greenhouse gas emissions that pollute the air
-
A single gallon of used oil illegally dumped into a sewer can contaminate ~1 million gallons of drinking water
-
One pint of the same used oil dumped in a wetland or lake could cover the surface area of an acre of water
-
Contamination from used oil in a landfill can remain in the ground for decades, and prevent soil from sustaining life
SquareOne Energy Products
We will implement proven technology for this facility, allowing us to deliver the
cleanest set of product yields in the U.S. re-refining industry.
-
Ultra low sulfur diesel. Our ULSD products have very little sulfur in them, and emit 80% less carbon dioxide emissions than traditional diesel.
-
Low-sulfur naphtha. Naphtha is a fuel source used to make gasoline and plastics.
-
Group III lube blend stock. These are special oils to make lubricants, and feature environmentally friendly benefits such as lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency.
Our Investment in the Region
SquareOne Energy was born in Greater Philadelphia, so when it came to choose the site for our facility, we decided there was no better place than home.
Our forthcoming Paulsboro, New Jersey, facility will be the first used oil recycling operation in the Northeast U.S., and will be the company’s most advanced and capable recycling asset. Currently, there are only 13 waste oil recycling facilities in the U.S. producing Group I (automotive lubricants and industrial oils) and Group II base oils (high-performance lubricants).
SquareOne Energy can produce them all, while catapulting this region forward as an important national energy hub in the Green Revolution.
Job creation
The facility will create new jobs — both temporary and permanent. These positions will offer employment at various skill levels, and allow workers to advance their careers in the clean energy industry. We are committed to giving employees advanced job training and professional development opportunities.
Our Technology Building a Sustainable Tomorrow
Our forthcoming Paulsboro, New Jersey, used oil recycling facility will be the first of its kind in the U.S. This facility — with our innovative, proven technology — will help to address America’s used oil disposal and processing crisis: We’ll keep these oils out of our air, soil and water by turning them into clean, on-road ready fuels.
Our facility design will have a sophisticated front end and pre-treatment stage, which will enable the facility to accept and process numerous types of recyclable feedstocks, many of which are currently being inappropriately burned or illegally disposed of. SquareOne’s wider array of recycable feedstocks differnetiate us from the existing re-refiners which traditionally only process used motor oil. Other feedstock materials we will be processing, in addition to used motor oil, will include residual marine used oils and more problematic “low flash” material (unusable distillates contaminated with gasoline) as well as various other off-spec and distressed carbons.
Our process & products FAQs
Why is SquareOne Energy developing this technology?
Rising environmental standards have created the need for a cleaner, higher demand fuel product from used motor oil and spent lubricants. Of the 429 million gallons of used oil wasted every year, nearly three-quarters (72%) is dumped illegally in landfills or storm sewers causing significant environmental harm. SquareOne will achieve a cleaner environment by acting as a steward for sustainable, renewable and environmentally beneficial industrial development.
What will be the primary uses of ULSD and other products produced at the facility?
These efficient and highly compliant fuel products will be produced primarily for land and marine use.
Who will purchase the ULSD and other products generated at the facility?
Concurrent with the facility’s development, SquareOne entered into an offtake agreement with Sunoco LP, the country’s largest independent fuel distributor. Sunoco will purchase and market all of SquareOne’s recycled ULSD and naphtha products that are generated at the Paulsboro facility.
